Planting Local knowledge Our local plant knowledge is invaluable when it comes to designing and planting up a garden. We know what grows on the Cape’s southern coast – what thrives in the sand and clay, what can withstand the hot, dry and often windy summers. Our choice of plants will also be dictated by your requirements: how much time you want to put into future garden maintenance? Do you like pruning and fertilising? Attracting wildlife We also know which plants attract which species of wildlife to the garden  - whether they be birds or baboons! Your garden plants can be chosen to create a unique habitat for a specific creature, or to attract a multitude of birds and insects. Colour and contrast The plants are the life of your garden – both literally, and figuratively. The colours and textures can be used to create contrast or unity, to soften or to embolden. They can transform your living space from a vibrant Gauguin to a gentle Monet. And we therefore choose them with thought not only to their biological suitability, but also according to the impact they will have. Preparation Soil preparation is crucial to a successful garden and is most probably the most important part of the planting process. This is particularly true in and around Hermanus which has relatively nutrient-poor soil – either sand or clay depending on your exact location. It makes little difference what your criteria is for picking a plant if it dies soon after planting. We do thorough soil preparation, using plenty of compost, as well as constructing our own agricultural drains so ensure the soil does not become boggy. Finally, once we have planted, we will generally use a mulch to ensure that the soil stays moist and the plants roots are protected.     Garden design & landscaping     Hard landscaping / construction     Waterwise & indigenous gardens     Planting     Water Features     Irrigation systems     Garden maintenance The Garden Company, Hermanus, South Africa, Tel: +27 (0)28 313 1610 riaan@thegardenco.co.za     webwits
